What Causes Headaches?

Posted under Causes of Headaches by admin

Headaches, Migraines, Their Causes and Home Remedies

Everyone has suffered a regular headache, and a huge percentage of adults have suffered from a migraine.  There are several things that separate a headache from a migraine.  A few characteristics are extreme photosensitivity, a throbbing pain on only one side, nausea or vomiting and possible visual distortions.

Whether it is a headache or a migraine, head pain can be caused by a huge variety of factors.  Some causes of headaches include stress, illness, sinus inflammation or neck pain.  Some migraines causes include bright lights (sunlight or fluorescent), certain foods, depression and in some women, hormone surges related to the menstrual cycle.  There are literally dozens of potential causes of headaches and migraines; these are just some of the more common ones.

Many people have to take pain medications nearly daily to control their pain, which most agree is not desirable.  There are several natural and herbal remedies that have success in controlling head pain.  The easiest is actually an ice pack, applied to the back of the head, right at the base of the skull.  For migraines especially, this is a quick and effective method of controlling the pain without taking medication that can cause drowsiness and lethargy.  After about ten minutes, the pain should be reduced or completely eradicated.  If the pain starts to rebound, reapply the ice pack for another ten minutes.

Another simple remedy is the massage of pressure points.  In either hand, where the thumb and the forefinger form a V, there will be a spot that, when the owner of the hand has head pain, will be extremely sore when squeezed.  Applying steady, moderate pressure by squeezing the sore spot will, in most cases, reduce the pain almost immediately.  It might take a few tries for the pain to go away completely.  I have found that it works better if I have someone else squeeze my pressure points, but I can do it myself if necessary.

Another pressure point that will relieve head pain is in the hollow at the base of the skull.  After bowing your head down, just letting it hang, pushing that spot in an upward motion is extremely effective in reducing head pain, regardless of the migraine cause, or the cause of the headache.

If the ice and/or pressure point therapy does not seem appealing, there are several herbs that help recurring head pain.  Keep in mind, though, that every herb that has medicinal qualities has the potential to effect your body chemistry and interact with other medications.  A doctor should be consulted before use, especially if you have a health issue such as high blood pressure, diabetes or if you take a blood thinner.

One herbal remedy that works for headaches is Feverfew.  It has a mild blood thinning property, so a doctor MUST be consulted if you already take something with that effect.  Feverfew doesn’t work like an OTC pain reliever.  It must typically be taken over time before it is effective.  Usually a few weeks will build it up to full effectiveness.  Regardless of what causes your headache, this is a good option for chronic headaches.

Another herb that is effective for head pain is Butterbur.  It also must be taken for a few weeks before reaching full efficacy.  It also has potential secondary effects and should be checked out with a doctor.

Regardless of the causes of headaches you are experiencing, there are alternative options for treating the pain.  You just have to be open to finding them.

Side effects of Phentermine, dizziness, headaches or heart problems?

Posted under Dizziness and Headaches by admin

I have been taking Phentermine for 4 days now and lost 5 pounds so far. My concern is the side effects I have been experiencing since taking Phentermine. Has anyone had dizziness, headaches or minor heart pain? And does these side effects go away in time and how long?

This is my 2nd time around…yes, there are headaches for about 5-7 days, but they will fade. I’ve not had dizziness or heart pain; I’d strongly recommend consulting your doctor if you are having heart issues.

what infection is referred to tender mucous accumulating at the back of the nose that causes headaches?

Posted under Causes of Headaches by admin

the infection causes dryness of the throat and difficulty in swallowing saliva; your nose gets clogged up and hard to breath; the headache is terrible and your eyelids are involuntarily pulled close like you want to sleep.

You have the classic signs of sinus infection. If you are this bad I would go to the Dr & get started on an antibiotic. Usually takes about 10 – 14 days. Also advised are nasal decongestants with an antihistamine (OTC). Found in cold or allergy tabs like Coriciden, Sudafed, Contact, etc.

Speaking from experience, I used to get sinus infection 2 – 3 x’s a year, the last one I had was so severe, the Dr put me on Flonase (nasal allergy spray) and I haven’t had any problems since. Only have to use Flonase now when I start sneezing. Ask your Dr about this. He may have a sample you can try.

having bad headaches pressure on the right tempo, neck pains dizziness, eyes hurt when pressed and confused?

Posted under Pressure Headaches by admin

I’m having bad headaches but different from migraine headaches with pressure on the right tempo some times I feel like something is beeping (no joke), neck pains but I can touch my chin to chest and dizziness, eyes hurt when pressed sometimes and I get a little confused from the most simplest things and nausea?

How do you know this isn’t a migraine? If it’s only on one side of the face (your right temPLE) and nausea, it sure sounds like a migraine to me. There are many kinds of migraines, and many great medications for them. Be sure to go into a dark, quiet bedroom.

I think you should see your doctor about these, and I wish you the best of luck. :)

Why might I have been having mild headaches with dizziness for about four days now any suggestions?

Posted under Dizziness and Headaches by admin

My headaches are mild to moderate so I don’t think they are migraines.
I feel like when I used to drink (haven’t in years though), I close my eyes and the the dizziness gets worse. I can function fine, no loss of motor skills, speech impairment, no nausea etc but the dizziness is really getting to me.I don’t have medical coverage and cant really afford to see a doctor that’s why I ask here. Any ideas why this might be happening?

Me, whatever is happening sounds serious enough to see a doctor. My blood pressure zoomed to 220/160 about 20 years ago. Yup, with the very same symptoms you described. Still, there were also the identical economic reasons for me to hold off seeing a doctor. This happened in Seattle. The city provided a free community clinic for people like ourselves. My wife and I were surprised to have been met with competent and very friendly medical personnel and treatment. It was all free, and the medication was sold to us at a wholesale price. It looks like you should consider doing what we did. I say "we" because my wife had a problem, and they treated her at the same time. Find out if your city provides similar service, and go for it. And Me please ignore any home remedies or amateur advice that may be suggested in response to your question. Find a way to get professional help regardless of the cost. Mike

Can you take allergy and headache medicines.?

Posted under Allergy Headache by admin

ya my mom just took some allergy meds but also has a headache.
can she also take pain reliver?
are there any sideaffects

As long as the allergy medication just had one active agent, an antihistamine (look at the label on the box)
and the pain reliever just has plain acetaminophen or ibuprofen or acetaminophen with aspirin and caffeine.
There shouldn’t really be any more side effects than with each of the medications taken separately.

How do i cure a headache without painkillers?

Posted under Headache Cure by admin

My dad always gets this headache that lasts for like a day or two.
I sometimes get it too, but its rare.
I know painkillers like advil will solve it but he doesn’t like medicine.
His symptoms are that its kind of shocking headache that hurts only if he moves the head rapidly.
Can someone suggest a way without medicine to cure this?
thanks.

1. Ok, thanks, but he doesn’t like any of those things even more than painkillers, he claims it disturbs him…
2. He often just gets better after a sleep, but meanwhile, he is very grumpy because of it.
3. Is there any home recipe that could help?

Sounds like migrains and he needs to seek medical assistace. Often, deep breathing, darkness, no caffine will help. But this needs to be medically evaluated – for both of you.

What Causes BACTERIA in the intestines to cause headaches?

Posted under Causes of Headaches by admin

I WAS TOLD THAT A BACTERIA IN MY INTESTINES COULD BE CAUSING CHRONIC HEADACHES. I WAS GIVEN THE WORD, ASCARDINUM.

Hm… the word may be related to "ascarid". It looks to me like a homoeopathic term, but I may be wrong. Could be related to the word Ascarides (?), which is related to rectum and stool… and intestinal parasite.

Maybe you should just ask the person and request more than one word from them.

Medically, ascar- is related to parasites.
