What Causes Headaches?

Headaches, Migraines, Their Causes and Home Remedies

Everyone has suffered a regular headache, and a huge percentage of adults have suffered from a migraine.  There are several things that separate a headache from a migraine.  A few characteristics are extreme photosensitivity, a throbbing pain on only one side, nausea or vomiting and possible visual distortions.

Whether it is a headache or a migraine, head pain can be caused by a huge variety of factors.  Some causes of headaches include stress, illness, sinus inflammation or neck pain.  Some migraines causes include bright lights (sunlight or fluorescent), certain foods, depression and in some women, hormone surges related to the menstrual cycle.  There are literally dozens of potential causes of headaches and migraines; these are just some of the more common ones.

Many people have to take pain medications nearly daily to control their pain, which most agree is not desirable.  There are several natural and herbal remedies that have success in controlling head pain.  The easiest is actually an ice pack, applied to the back of the head, right at the base of the skull.  For migraines especially, this is a quick and effective method of controlling the pain without taking medication that can cause drowsiness and lethargy.  After about ten minutes, the pain should be reduced or completely eradicated.  If the pain starts to rebound, reapply the ice pack for another ten minutes.

Another simple remedy is the massage of pressure points.  In either hand, where the thumb and the forefinger form a V, there will be a spot that, when the owner of the hand has head pain, will be extremely sore when squeezed.  Applying steady, moderate pressure by squeezing the sore spot will, in most cases, reduce the pain almost immediately.  It might take a few tries for the pain to go away completely.  I have found that it works better if I have someone else squeeze my pressure points, but I can do it myself if necessary.

Another pressure point that will relieve head pain is in the hollow at the base of the skull.  After bowing your head down, just letting it hang, pushing that spot in an upward motion is extremely effective in reducing head pain, regardless of the migraine cause, or the cause of the headache.

If the ice and/or pressure point therapy does not seem appealing, there are several herbs that help recurring head pain.  Keep in mind, though, that every herb that has medicinal qualities has the potential to effect your body chemistry and interact with other medications.  A doctor should be consulted before use, especially if you have a health issue such as high blood pressure, diabetes or if you take a blood thinner.

One herbal remedy that works for headaches is Feverfew.  It has a mild blood thinning property, so a doctor MUST be consulted if you already take something with that effect.  Feverfew doesn’t work like an OTC pain reliever.  It must typically be taken over time before it is effective.  Usually a few weeks will build it up to full effectiveness.  Regardless of what causes your headache, this is a good option for chronic headaches.

Another herb that is effective for head pain is Butterbur.  It also must be taken for a few weeks before reaching full efficacy.  It also has potential secondary effects and should be checked out with a doctor.

Regardless of the causes of headaches you are experiencing, there are alternative options for treating the pain.  You just have to be open to finding them.

Can low blood pressure cause headaches? If so, how to stop them?

Posted under Pressure Headaches by admin

My blood pressure is never high, but since losing weight, it now runs about 90/64. It also drops easily. Can that be the cause of headaches/lightheadedness?

Is there anything to remedy this? Other than gaining weight again, which I sure don’t want to do.

Thanks.

Both answers above are correct. If you eat something and the headache goes away in 30 minutes or so, it was probably low blood sugar. The low sodium/blood volume issue could be related. By way of prevention and management, if you eat a bit you’ll get salt without addidng it – like a piece of fruit, a tomato juice, or cracker. you may find you need to include small snacks and/or beverages in your total food for the day that will keep your blood sugar/pressure up without gaining back the weight. Rather than adding more food, just spread it out and eat more times more so you don’t get blood sugar ‘blips and drops’ during the day. High fiber, low sugar foods like berries, tomato, salad, cucumber, unsweetened yogurt with fruit, hummus with celery or carrots, etc. will keep your blood sugar even without ruining your weight loss.

For headache relief what you can do besides eating something, drinking something – caffeine makes pain relievers more effective in treating a headache. A cup of tea or coffee or a pain reliever with caffeine might speed up relief from the headache.

I have always been dizzy and unstable, but lately in the past 3 months I have got about 2 headaches a week and some chest pains along with it. I don’t know what it is all about..

See your doctor and let him/her sort it out. I would have said you had an ear problem but then you threw in pain in your chest which combined with the other symptoms needs a visit with your doctor.

When I take allergy medicine I develop strip throat/sinus headaches?

Posted under Allergy Headache by admin

I have post nasal drip, and I’am scheduled to have a septoplasty and a turbinate reduction in two weeks. But I’m curious to know why is it that when I take allergy medicine I develop strip throat and sinus headaches all the time? Allergy medicine really dries up my post nasal drip, but leaves me with a strip throat and sinus headaches on and off. I was wondering why this is?
Laura, you’re an idiot.

Try this instead.
My husband uses this to keep from getting bronchitis when he gets a sinus infection, and I use it to cure sinus infections. THere are many kinds of bacteria that live in the sinuses, and this gets rid of all the bad ones!.This is the only thing that really helped me — my Dr. told me about a sinus wash that will kill bacteria.
you need

distilled water
sea salt
liquid chlorophyll and colloidal silver from the health food store.
in a glass mix 1/4 cup water with a pinch of salt and heat to body temperature.
add 5 drops each silver and chlorophyll and mix.
using a large dropper (like one used for infant medication) drop 2 full droppersfull into one side of the nose while laying down.
Turn the head and let it drain out the other nostril. Be sure to have paper towels handy. or just use a neti pot, I like this better.
The silver kills the bacteria and there are several hundred kind that can live in the sinus cavities and anti biotics don’t get rid of them all.
Do this twice a day for a week, mixing up the mixture fresh each time.
Then do it once a week for maintenance.
There is nothing in this that will hurt you, and it cured me.
I do not have to take claritin, or antibiotics anymore.
best wishes

What causes headaches and what kind of headache is this?

Posted under Causes of Headaches by admin

I have had a headache since about 1pm. I keep forgetting to take something for it but yet is hasn’t gone on its own.

My headache is on the top of my head no in the back more toward the front.

Tension-type headaches affect almost everyone at some point. Those that happen occasionally are just that: occasional headaches. Some people, however, have tension-type headaches just about every day, and these are considered to be chronic. Headache symptoms for tension-type headaches usually include pressure or muscle tension on both sides of the head or back of the neck; the pain is usually constant, not sharp or throbbing. Many people describe them as like having a band squeezed around their head.Hormone headaches are menstrual headaches that may start before your period is due or while you’re menstruating. Migraines are often associated with menstruation, and symptoms include sharp, throbbing pain on one side of the head, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, and even touch.Cluster headaches affect men more often than women. They are extremely intense, very severe headaches that last between 30 and 45 minutes; you can have several in one day. They usually come on with no warning, catching people by surprise. The pain is piercing and usually located on one side of the head, often around the eye. People also report teary eyes on the affected side and sinus congestion. The headaches will recur over a period of time, almost always on the same side, and are followed by a headache-free period of varying length.Migraines are often put in a class by themselves because of the intensity of the pain and the overall effect they have on the body. For some people, migraine symptoms include auras, which are symptoms that occur before the pain hits. The auras can be visual (seeing lines or spots) or they can cause motor or verbal disturbances. “It’s estimated that 50 million people in the United States have migraine,” says Dr. Herzog. However, most do not have migraine with aura.

Chronic headaches with congestion and ear pressure?

Posted under Pressure Headaches by admin

I have spent the last several years with constant nasal and chest congestion with chronic headaches and earaches. All of the sudden about 6 days ago I got a severe headache with ear pressure and it hasn’t gone away since. The pain and pressure is constant. I’ve had a doc tell me that my headaches were probably caused by chronic candidiasis, but this sudden flare makes me think there’s something else wrong. I need some relief!

It is my undoctored view that you are suffering from chronic allergy problems. The chronic allergy problems are causing the nasal congestion, chest congestion, chronic headaches and earaches.
The sudden increase is due to a superimposed ear infection.
